Elite iQ™ Hair Removal in Bellevue, WA
How Does Elite iQ Work?
Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?
Yes, with the right laser. The 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength passes the pigment in the surface of the skin and reaches the hair follicle deep below, which makes it safe for medium to deep skin tones. Most burns, dark marks and light patches in darker skin come from shorter wavelengths that heat the skin’s own pigment. At Serenity, darker skin is a focus, not an afterthought.
What laser does Serenity use for hair removal?
The Cynosure Elite iQ, using its 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength for every patient and every skin type. Hair removal lasers work by heating the pigment in the hair until the follicle is disabled. Because your skin has pigment too, the wavelength has to reach the follicle without heating the skin’s surface, and that’s what the 1064 nm does. Dr. O’Connell is a Cynosure Luminary Provider of the Elite iQ.
Why don’t you use the Alexandrite laser for hair removal?
For hair removal, the 755 nm Alexandrite delivers sustained heat that is strongly absorbed by any pigment in the skin, from a natural olive tone to a summer tan. That leaves little margin for error unless the skin is very fair and untanned. The 1064 nm Nd:YAG is safe for every skin type, so we use it for everyone. We do use the 755 nm wavelength in our PicoSure for pigment and tattoos, where pulses lasting trillionths of a second break up pigment with pressure instead of heat.
Does a medical provider have to examine me before laser hair removal in Washington?
Yes. In Washington, laser hair removal is a medical procedure. Before your first treatment, a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner must examine you and approve your treatment plan. An esthetician or nurse cannot clear you alone. Anyone operating the laser must be licensed, trained and working under written protocols. A medical evaluation isn’t a bonus. It’s the law. Wherever you go, ask who examined you and who is responsible for your treatment. At Serenity, Dr. O’Connell personally does every consultation.
Who performs laser hair removal at Serenity?
Trained laser providers under Dr. Stephen O’Connell’s direct supervision. He directs every treatment plan, and women are treated by a female provider.
What determines how well laser hair removal works for me?
Five things, and we evaluate all of them at your consultation:
- Genetics. Hair density, thickness and growth patterns run in families and shape how many sessions you’ll need.
- Hormones. Changes such as pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause or medications can activate new follicles over time.
- PMOS (formerly PCOS). Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome affects about 1 in 10 women. It’s closely tied to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, commonly causes unwanted facial and body hair, and can make hair more resistant to treatment.
- Body area. The face and neck have dense follicles and need more sessions. Underarms and bikini often clear faster.
- Hair color. Brown to black hair responds best. Gray, white, platinum blond and red hair lack the pigment the laser targets and respond poorly to any laser.
Anyone who promises a fixed number of sessions without looking at these isn’t seeing the whole picture.
Do the laser settings really matter?
Yes. The same laser can give excellent results or poor ones, and the difference is the settings. Several work together:
- Energy: enough to disable the follicle, never so much that it injures the skin.
- Pulse width: matched to the thickness of your hair, so the follicle heats while the surrounding skin stays protected.
- Spot size: the width of the beam, which controls how deep the energy reaches.
- Cooling: protects the skin’s surface during every pulse.
Settings aren’t set once and left alone. As your hair becomes finer, they’re adjusted every session to keep reaching it.
Why does spot size matter for fine hair?
Large spot sizes reach deep and cover ground fast, which suits coarse hair. Fine hair needs a smaller spot to concentrate the energy where it counts. Staying on a large spot size as hair becomes finer is one of the most common reasons treatments stall.
What makes the Elite iQ better than older lasers?
More power at small and intermediate spot sizes, at a faster pace. Smaller spots used to mean slower treatments and less power, so fine, stubborn hair was the hardest to finish. Cynosure’s lasers have evolved from the Apogee to the Apogee Elite, the Elite+ and now the Elite iQ, and the Elite iQ closes that gap, so fine and late-stage hair can be treated effectively without hours in the chair. Dr. O’Connell has owned and used every one of these generations, and the Elite iQ is the best of them.
Why didn’t laser hair removal work for me somewhere else?
The most common reasons are the wrong wavelength for your skin, settings that weren’t adjusted as your hair became finer (like staying on a large spot size), or an underlying hormonal driver like PMOS that was never addressed. We look at all three.
Does laser hair removal work if I have PMOS (PCOS)?
Yes, though it usually takes more sessions and some maintenance, because the hormonal and metabolic drivers keep stimulating follicles. The best long-term results come from treating the hair and the insulin resistance behind it together, and Dr. O’Connell spends real time with patients on this. More about PMOS and unwanted hair.
How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?
Typically 6 to 9 sessions for body areas and 9 to 12 for the face. Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only reaches hairs in the active growth phase (anagen), so sessions are timed to catch each new set. Hormonal hair and PMOS can need more.
What happens at my first visit?
A complimentary consultation with Dr. O’Connell. He reviews the five factors above, your skin, your medications and your history, confirms laser hair removal is right for you, and builds an individualized plan, including what to do before and after each session.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most patients find it very tolerable. Each pulse feels like a quick snap or tingle, and a cooling system protects the skin. Sensitive areas like the bikini line are more noticeable but brief. A topical numbing cream is available on request.
Is there downtime after laser hair removal?
No. The Elite iQ doesn’t break the skin. Mild redness or minor swelling usually fades within a few hours, and you can return to your normal day.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Yes. It provides permanent hair reduction. Hair grows back thinner and finer with each session, and most treated follicles eventually stop producing hair. Hormonal changes can activate new follicles over time, so a touch-up once or twice a year keeps results.
Why does my hair look patchy between sessions?
That’s normal. Each session reaches a different set of follicles, so hair can look patchy in between. It evens out as the series goes on.
How do I prepare for laser hair removal?
- 7 days before: stop photosensitizing medications, especially tetracycline antibiotics (check with us first), and stop oils and retinol on the treatment area.
- 7 days before and after: avoid prolonged or intense sun exposure. Avoid self-tanner until it has fully faded.
- The day before: shave the area cleanly.
- Throughout your series: don’t wax, tweeze, sugar or thread. Those pull the hair from the root, which the laser needs to target.
What areas can be treated?
Face and upper lip, neck, underarms, bikini and Brazilian, legs, arms, back, chest and shoulders.
How much does laser hair removal cost, and do you offer packages?
Cost depends on the areas treated and the number of sessions you need, so your plan includes detailed pricing after your consultation. Packages are available.
