HOW DOES IPL WORK?
Every color has a different wavelength of light, which can be either absorbed by or reflected off any surface it hits. A laser uses one color of light, making it monochromatic, while IPL uses a blend of many colors, making it polychromatic.
Our skin contains what are known as “chromophores,” which absorb light. So, when IPL shines on different areas of the skin, the chromophores absorb the energy of the light at a specific wavelength, causing them to heat up. When heated, the pigment is broken apart and will eventually fade away.
HOW DO I PREPARE FOR TREATMENT?
- Retin-A for ten days before treatment.
- Tanning, sun exposure, and spray tanning for one month before treatment.
- Antibiotics for ten days before treatment.
Patients who are pregnant are not ideal candidates for IPL Photofacial treatment.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER TREATMENT?
After treatment, patients may feel warm and slightly red similar to a sunburn. Generally, these symptoms dissipate after a few days. Over the following days after treatment, patients will notice skin pigment becoming darker and more pronounced. Hyperpigmented areas will eventually slough off and vascular lesions will disappear. You’ll see minimized pore size and a clear and brilliant complexion.
